Project Ondas/Acustica

ONDAS ("waves") is a collaborative partnership with local NGOs and governmental agencies to understand (1) the contribution of boat traffic to soundscapes inside and outside protected areas  and (2) its potential impacts on marine habitats and communities of Central America.

Lead Investigator Laura J May-Collado
Organizations that have funded and provided logistics for ONDAS include:

Panacetacea-Moore Foundation
MI Ambiente-PNUD
Conservation International-Costa Rica

Research Collaborators
  Juan Jose Alvarado (CIMAR-UCR)
 Jose David Palacios
Betzi Perez & Kristin Rasmussen
 (PANACETACEA)
Jose Julio Casas & Lissette Trejos (MI Ambiente)
 John Calambokidis (CASCADIA).

This project seeks to understand the long-term changes in human activities, marine organisms, and marine communities. We have deployed a network of autonomous underwater recorders call SoundTraps by Ocean Instruments that record the soundscape for months at a time.  A sample of our 2,000,000 minutes of recordings is already in our project at RFCxArbimon. In 2023, part of this sound library will be made available to the public to support outreach and education efforts about our oceans. For more information email the PI Dr. May-Collado [email protected].
